California Representative Ro Khanna has announced that he will not be running for the Senate, instead endorsing liberal icon Barbara Lee over fellow Representatives Katie Porter and Adam Schiff.
In an interview with CNN on Sunday, Khanna praised Lee's strong stance against the war in Iraq and her ability to unite progressives in Northern California.
"She'll be the only candidate from Northern California and she's going to, I think, consolidate a lot of progressives," said Khanna.
Khanna's endorsement could prove crucial in what is expected to be a highly contested race. Lee has been a vocal advocate for progressive causes throughout her career, including championing issues such as racial justice and healthcare reform.
Lee also made history as the only member of Congress to vote against authorizing the use of military force following 9/11. She has continued to advocate for peace ever since.
"I'm honored to have Congressman Ro Khanna's support," said Lee in response to the endorsement. "Together we will fight for bold solutions that promote justice and equity for all."
The decision not to run comes as no surprise given that Khanna had previously expressed his desire to focus on his work as co-chair of Bernie Sanders' presidential campaign rather than launching his own bid for higher office.
As attention now turns towards the Senate race between Porter, Schiff, and Lee - it remains unclear who will come out on top. However, with endorsements like those from Rep. Ro Khanna behind her candidacy – Barbara Lee may just have an edge over her competitors in this tight race.
