California Representative Ro Khanna has decided not to pursue a Senate run and instead, is endorsing liberal icon Barbara Lee as the next Senator from Northern California. On Sunday, during an interview with CNN, Khanna lauded Lee's stance against the war in Iraq and her leadership capabilities.
"She stood up so strongly against the war in Iraq," said Khanna. "She'll be the only candidate from Northern California and she's going to, I think, consolidate a lot of progressives."
Khanna's endorsement is expected to boost Lee's campaign significantly as he has been a vocal advocate of progressive policies and has won over several supporters across the state. His decision to back Lee comes after weeks of speculation about his own Senate run.
Lee, who currently represents Oakland and parts of East Bay in Congress since 1998, is known for her strong opposition to war and advocacy for social justice causes such as healthcare reform, gun control measures and climate change policies.
In response to Khanna's endorsement on Twitter ,Lee expressed her gratitude saying," Thank you @RoKhanna for your support & partnership! Together we will continue fighting for #MedicareForAll #GreenNewDeal & social justice!"
Lee will now face competition from fellow Representatives Katie Porter and Adam Schiff who are also vying for Senator Dianne Feinstein’s seat when she retires at the end of this term.
The primary election will take place on June 7th next year followed by the general election on November 8th.
