Former President Donald Trump has been indicted by a New York City grand jury on charges of falsifying business records relating to payments made to adult film star Stormy Daniels. The indictment, which is currently under seal, reportedly includes more than 30 counts of business fraud.
Trump's lawyers have indicated that he will surrender to New York authorities early next week. His arrest in New York will see him read his Miranda rights, fingerprinted and photographed like any other criminal. However, it is thought that he may be spared the notorious "perp walk" where suspects are led out in front of the District Attorney's Office or police station in handcuffs for the world and press to see.
Federal and local law enforcement are bracing for a slew of pro- and anti-Trump protesters outside the DA's office raising concerns about possible clashes between both groups. While it is not yet clear what charges will be levelled at Trump, some experts believe he could face charges related to falsifying business records.
The Manhattan district attorney's office had requested that former President Trump's legal team arrange for him to surrender on Friday; however, security concerns prompted his lawyers' rejection. Police have identified “no credible threats” at this time as Secret Service prepares ahead of the unprecedented arrest of a former president.
If he surrenders himself quietly, authorities will likely fingerprint him and take a mugshot at the DA’s office before entering a plea at an arraignment. This marks the first time in American history that a former president faces criminal charges.
Two other investigations targeting Trump by Biden administration’s Justice Department over his role in Jan 6 Capitol riot & handling classified documents & one by Democratic Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis remain active.
