Former President Donald Trump has been indicted by a grand jury in New York City on charges related to falsifying business records. The charges stem from payments made to adult film star Stormy Daniels to prevent her from revealing an affair she allegedly had with Mr. Trump before the 2016 election.
According to reports, Mr. Trump is facing more than 30 counts related to business fraud and his indictment is currently under seal. His lawyers have indicated that he will surrender to New York authorities early next week.
This marks the first time in US history that a former president faces criminal charges. Federal and local law enforcement are reportedly bracing for pro- and anti-Trump protesters outside of the district attorney's office in Manhattan, where he will likely be required to surrender.
Mr. Trump has vehemently denied any wrongdoing and called for supporters to protest earlier this month as the investigation wrapped up.
The Manhattan district attorney's office asked Mr. Trump's legal team to arrange for him to surrender Friday, but due to security concerns, his lawyers rejected the plan.
Further investigations targeting Mr. Trump include two from the Biden administration's Justice Department over his role in the Jan 6, 2021 Capitol riot and handling of classified documents; one led by Democratic Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis also targets him.
This story is developing, and it remains unclear what specific charges will be leveled against Mr. Trump when his indictment is unsealed at arraignment.
