Late Night host Stephen Colbert announced on Thursday night that a New York grand jury had voted to indict former president Donald J. Trump, making him the first person to occupy the Oval Office to be charged with this crime. While many were outraged by the news, Colbert took a humorous approach, jokingly suggesting that he should see if the grand jury will cut him a check for $130,000.
In response to the indictment news, GOP lawmakers rallied around Trump's White House campaign. First-term lawmaker and staunch ally of Trump Sen. J.D. Vance (R-OH) sent a text to supporters shortly after the news was announced urging them to support Trump's campaign in light of these charges.
On the other hand, Democrats used this as an opportunity to urge their supporters to protect their party's control of both White House and Senate.
The move raised questions about whether or not former President Donald Trump would run for office while being criminally prosecuted given his reputation for being politically divisive and controversial.
Florida-based Trump is now expected to surrender himself on Tuesday at Manhattan district attorney’s office where he will be fingerprinted and photographed for a mugshot in an attempt distract from upcoming Republican primaries which could create further political turmoil.
