Sunnyvale, California - A manhunt is still underway Friday morning for a suspect who led police on a car chase Thursday night. The search prompted authorities to cancel school in the area on Friday as a precautionary measure.
According to the Department of Public Safety (DPS), the suspect was armed with a gun and fired shots at deputies during the pursuit. The officers returned fire but it is unclear if the suspect was hit.
The chase began around 9 p.m. on Thursday when authorities attempted to pull over a vehicle for reckless driving. The driver refused to stop and instead led them on a high-speed chase through several neighborhoods in Sunnyvale.
The pursuit came to an end when the suspect crashed his car into another vehicle near Remington Drive and Crossman Avenue. He then fled from the scene on foot.
Police set up a perimeter around the area and conducted an extensive search throughout Thursday night, but were unable to locate him. Authorities are asking residents in the area to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity they may witness.
As of this writing, there have been no reports of injuries or damage caused by gunfire from either side during this incident.
It remains unclear whether or not schools will be open Monday or if there will be any additional safety measures put into place once classes resume.
