Former Attorney General William Barr has criticized former President Donald Trump's decision to testify in court if his criminal indictment goes to trial. In an appearance on Fox News Sunday, Barr argued that Trump lacks "all self-control" and it would be difficult for him to prepare himself and keep him testifying in a prudent fashion.
Last week, a Manhattan grand jury indicted the former president following an investigation by Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg's office into an alleged hush money payment of $130,000 paid by Trump's former lawyer, Michael Cohen, to adult film star Stormy Daniels ahead of the 2016 presidential election.
Barr was a longtime ally of Trump but became more publicly critical of the former president following the 2020 election. He still characterized the Manhattan DA’s case against Trump as politically motivated, aligning with rhetoric from Trump and his backers.
Barr's 2022 memoir "One Damn Thing After Another" repeatedly described Trump as a difficult boss who would throw tantrums and often go off track.
On Thursday, after news broke about the indictment against Trump, Barr responded with a flurry of posts on his social media platform Truth Social attacking Bragg's office. He believes that there is nothing inherently wrong or illegal about making hush payments.
Trump is scheduled to turn himself in to authorities on Tuesday April 4th in New York City and will make remarks from his Palm Beach estate Mar-a-Lago at 8:15 p.m.
William Barr has criticized Donald Trump for planning on taking the stand during his upcoming trial regarding allegations surrounding hush money payments made before he was elected president. Despite their past relationship as allies, it seems that even those closest to Donald are recognizing some flaws in regards to how he handles certain situations such as this one where he may lack self-control or preparation needed to testify properly.
