A massive fire broke out at the Johnson & Sons factory in downtown this morning, causing significant damage to the building and prompting a large-scale emergency response.
According to eyewitnesses, flames could be seen shooting from the roof of the factory shortly after 9 a.m. local time. Firefighters arrived on scene within minutes and immediately began working to contain the blaze.
"We could feel the heat from blocks away," said John Smith, who works in an office building across from the factory. "It was really scary."
Despite their efforts, however, firefighters struggled to bring the fire under control due to strong winds that spread embers throughout the surrounding area. As a result, several nearby businesses were evacuated as a precautionary measure.
Fortunately, no injuries have been reported so far. However, officials say that it is too early to assess how much damage has been done or what caused the fire.
"We're still investigating," said Fire Chief David Thompson in a statement released earlier today. "Right now our focus is on putting out any remaining hot spots and preventing further damage."
The Johnson & Sons factory produces industrial machinery for export around the world and employs over 500 workers. It is not yet clear how long it will take for operations to resume following today's events.
"Our hearts go out to everyone affected by this terrible incident," said company spokesperson Jane Johnson in a brief statement. "We are committed to working closely with authorities and doing everything we can do get back up and running as soon as possible."
