In a move aimed at combating climate change, President Joe Biden signed an executive order on Wednesday that will prioritize climate action across all federal agencies.
The order directs the Department of Interior to halt new oil and gas leases on public lands and offshore waters, while also launching a review of existing leasing and permitting practices. It also establishes a task force to review methane emissions regulations and calls for the establishment of new fuel economy standards for cars and trucks.
During the signing ceremony at the White House, President Biden stressed the urgency of addressing climate change. "We can't wait any longer," he said. "We see it with our own eyes, we feel it in our bones."
Environmental groups praised the executive order as a significant step towards reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
"This is exactly what we need from our leaders right now," said Gina McCarthy, president of the Natural Resources Defense Council. "It's time to take bold action to protect our planet for future generations."
However, some critics argue that halting new oil and gas leases could lead to job losses in energy-producing states such as Texas and Louisiana.
In response, President Biden emphasized his commitment to creating clean energy jobs through investments in renewable energy sources like wind and solar power.
"We're not going to forget those communities who are hurting now because they relied on fossil fuels," he said. "We're going to make sure they have opportunities in the new clean energy economy."
The executive order marks one of several actions taken by President Biden during his first week in office aimed at addressing climate change.
