Far-right Georgia Republican, Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene, has defended her controversial comments about the Democratic Party being driven by pedophiles in an interview with CBS’s “60 Minutes” on Sunday. The 14-minute segment sparked controversy before it was broadcast, with critics questioning whether the congresswoman should receive a primetime platform.
During the interview, correspondent Lesley Stahl rolled her eyes as Greene claimed that Democrats were supporting children being sexualized and having transgender surgeries but insisted they are not pedophiles. Stahl asked Greene about other "over-the-top" comments such as calling Democrats "a party of pedophiles," to which she responded with another eye roll.
Greene has been called out for her baseless conspiracy theories and false claims about several issues including former President Barack Obama secretly being a Muslim and accusing Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) of treason punishable by death.
The Georgia lawmaker introduced a bill seeking to outlaw more than a dozen medical interventions and took aim at gender-affirming care for trans youth. Her recent remarks have led to widespread criticism from both sides of the political aisle.
Despite calls from critics that she shouldn’t be given airtime, CBS aired the interview where she continued to make unfounded allegations against the Democratic Party.
Meanwhile, on Sunday evening, Greene announced that she would travel to New York on Tuesday to protest against Donald Trump's expected arrest in connection with his alleged involvement in hush money paid to porn star Stormy Daniels.
There was no immediate response from CBS News regarding criticisms leveled at them for providing a platform for Greene's unsubstantiated claims during their flagship news program.
