Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) has called for Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas to be impeached after a report revealed that he’s been taking luxury trips paid for by Republican megadonor Harlan Crow and not disclosing them. The New York City Congress member was reacting to a ProPublica report that lays out Thomas’ undisclosed ties to billionaire GOP donor Harlan Crow.
Ocasio-Cortes said, "This is an almost cartoonish level of corruption." She demanded that the justice either step down or face impeachment over his wife's involvement in efforts to overturn the 2020 presidential election.
Progressive judicial groups are also demanding congressional action in response to the report. However, Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Sen. Dick Durbin (D) and a spokeswoman for the Judiciary Committee have yet to comment on what actions they will take regarding this matter.
The investigation detailed luxurious trips taken by Thomas, which include destinations such as New Zealand, Indonesia, California, Texas, and Georgia; all funded by Dallas businessman Harlan Crow. Additionally, these outings often involved yachts and private jets owned by Crow himself.
Senators Sheldon Whitehouse (D-R.I.) joined Rep. Ocasio-Cortez in calling for an independent investigation into this issue while Chief Creditor John Roberts urged justices should consult their Code of Conduct if guidance is needed since it doesn't subject its members officially like other federal courts do.
Crow denied allegations stating he had provided luxury trips over years but claimed instead that Justice Thomas never asked him directly about accepting gifts from him during those periods when questioned further on this topic area specifically involving any possible relationship between them personally outside court proceedings where both parties would interact regularly due legal matters being discussed together within same environments throughout time spent there overall regardless whether current situation reflects back decades ago when first meeting took place or even more recently as well considering how often they have crossed paths professionally speaking here now moving forward again.
Connecticut Senator Chris Murphy also joined the call for Thomas' impeachment, saying that his actions set a dangerous precedent of unethical behavior in the Supreme Court. Thomas has been a regular guest at Crow's Adirondacks resort since his confirmation following President George H.W.
