House Judiciary Chairman Jim Jordan (R-OH) has issued a subpoena to Mark Pomerantz, a former prosecutor who led the Manhattan district attorney's investigation of Donald Trump. The subpoena seeks his appearance before the committee for a deposition and he has previously declined to cooperate with the committee.
The probe, conducted by Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg, resulted in the first-ever criminal charges against a former or sitting president on Tuesday. These charges were brought against Trump for falsifying business records to hide hush money payments ahead of the 2016 election to keep women quiet about sexual encounters they had with him. Trump pleaded not guilty and denies having affairs with these women.
Mark Pomerantz is a veteran New York attorney who left his high-profile law firm position to serve as an assistant district attorney under Bragg’s predecessor, Cyrus Vance Jr. He resigned last March before leaking a highly critical resignation letter criticizing District Attorney Alvin Bragg's decision not to pursue criminal case against former President Donald Trump.
The subpoena comes amid rising tensions between Republican committee chairs and Bragg's office over accusations that Mr.Trump's indictment is politically motivated and emblematic of an abuse within "weaponized" criminal justice system.
While Republicans could cite Pomerantz for criminal contempt if he refuses their request, it remains unlikely that Department of Justice would follow through due given political nature of this situation surrounding oversight work being done by Mr.Jordan.`
As prosecution may have already come towards its end regarding Mr.Trump himself; focus now shifts onto enforcing subpoenas targeting key figures involved such as Michael Jordan - line prosecutor required testify about active investigations prior 2024 congressional elections taking place`.
In response allegations made saying DA directed non-cooperation from Pomersantanz' part- Peter Navarro (another Jan 6th Committee witness whom also authored book detailing interactions w/Trump) currently faces prosecution regarding contempt of Congress due refusal testify.
Republicans have been seeking testimony and official documents from Leslie Dubeck, Bragg's general counsel. They argue that the inquiry into Trump is linked to national implications of prosecuting a former president and should not be used as basis for drafting bills on federal forfeiture funds usage.
In response to these subpoenas, Bragg’s office has called accusations of political persecution "baseless" and urged Republicans to refrain from inflammatory rhetoric surrounding this matter at hand.`
The subpoena issued by Jordan aims to gather evidence suggesting investigations faced by other prosecutors are politically motivated; such evidence may include statements made which imply bias or favoritism towards certain parties involved within cases being handled`.
