The key factor that enabled this innovative approach was comparing each total lunar eclipse's color and brightness as described in the manuscripts. Darker eclipses indicated a higher concentration of aerosol particles in Earth's upper atmosphere. This information allowed scientists to determine which eruptions reached stratospheric levels, making them more likely to generate climatic cooling effects.
Dr. Alice Johnson, one member of the research team specializing in atmospheric sciences, explained: "By analyzing these medieval accounts, we can now better understand past volcanic activity patterns and their impact on climate change."
