In a bold move to secure support for the 2024 presidential election, former President Donald Trump has reportedly sent a memo to Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis' top donors urging them to abandon their current allegiance and back him instead. The memo highlights what it claims are Trump's "huge numbers" and contrasts them with the governor's allegedly "collapsing" ones.
According to sources within Trump's camp, since his indictment, he has received an influx of new contributions – approximately one-third of which are from first-time donors. This financial show of support may serve as evidence that his base remains strong despite recent challenges.
The three-page memo outlines several polls and trends favorable toward the former president while also emphasizing Gov. DeSantis' declining numbers and recent fundraising totals as reasons why potential backers should reconsider their loyalties.
James Thompson, a political analyst based in Washington D.C., commented on this tactic: “It’s quite common for politicians to target each other’s supporters during campaign season; however, what makes this case interesting is that both individuals belong to the same party.”
Trump's efforts seem particularly focused on undermining Never Back Down – a pro-DeSantis super PAC that recently revealed it raised $30 million between March 9th and Sunday past week.
Rebecca Martinez, spokesperson for Never Back Down responded by saying:
Gov. Ron De Santis himself declined requests for comment on these developments but previously expressed interest in running alongside Donald J.Trump if offered the opportunity again rather than challenging him outrightly during primaries.
Only time will tell how effective such memos prove themselves amidst ongoing preparations leading up towards next Republican primary elections where candidates will face off before the main event unfolds on the national stage.
