A Seattle restaurant owner has filed a federal lawsuit against the city, alleging that his business suffered significant financial losses and damages during the 2020 Capitol Hill Occupied Protest (CHOP). Peter Pak, owner of the affected restaurant, claims that officials' efforts to accommodate thousands of demonstrators who gathered at Capitol Hill during the Black Lives Matter protests cost his establishment tens of thousands of dollars in lost revenue and other damages.
The lawsuit argues that by setting up portable toilets and dumpsters for protesters near Pak's restaurant, the city transformed its location "into the epicenter of its public-sanitation support of CHOP." As a result, this negatively impacted both foot traffic around his business as well as customer interest. Furthermore, it states that throughout these events spanning several months last year; Pak was forced to board up windows due to repeated incidents involving vandalism resulting in additional costs amounting to thousands more dollars.
According to legal documents filed on behalf on Mr. Pak's behalf: "The violence that erupted inside [the] protest zone drove customers away from [his] restaurant" while simultaneously endangering employees—some even quitting out fear for their safety given ongoing concerns about coming into work each day amidst such chaos within close proximity.
In addition to these allegations directly impacting profits at Peter’s eatery over an extended period time frame extending beyond initial demonstrations themselves which took place primarily June 8
