Special Counsel Jack Smith is currently investigating former President Donald Trump's efforts to raise funds off of purportedly false claims of election fraud, according to a recent leak to the Washington Post. Federal prosecutors are examining money raised between November 3, 2020, and January 20, 2021. Subpoenas have been issued to Trump advisers and former campaign aides, Republican operatives, and other consultants involved in the 2020 presidential campaign.
The fundraising aspect of the investigation focuses on the period between November 3rd and January 20th – during which time it is alleged that $200 million was generated by Trump alongside several pro-Trump political action committees (PACs). Prosecutors aim to determine whether anyone associated with this fundraising operation violated wire fraud laws.
"I can confirm that we are looking into various aspects related to fundraising activities," said Special Counsel Jack Smith. "Our goal is to ensure all parties involved adhered strictly to federal regulations."
In addition to scrutinizing financial matters surrounding these donations, Smith has also taken charge of an ongoing investigation into allegations that President Trump mishandled classified documents following his departure from office. In May this year, after being served with a subpoena from the Justice Department demanding he return so-called classified records stored at Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida; federal agents seized multiple documents from there.
"We cannot provide specific details about ongoing investigations," stated Special Agent Michelle Anderson when asked about both cases' progress. "However, we can assure you our team remains committed towards ensuring transparency while upholding justice."
As subpoenas continue rolling out for those connected with either case under review by Special Counsel Jack Smith’s team - legal experts predict a potentially long road ahead before any conclusions may be reached or charges brought forward against individuals found guilty within their respective inquiries.
