Hutch and Huntress: Blazer Winners Making a Mark in Maryland's Startup Scene

Baltimore-based startup incubator, Hutch, has been recognized as one of the two Blazer Winners at this year's Fire Awards. The prestigious award is given to companies that have demonstrated exceptional growth and impact in their respective fields.

Hutch recently launched its fifth cohort with a focus on software development startups, providing them with resources and support they need to thrive. One of the standout success stories from their program is Ellicott City firm Huntress. In 2022 alone, Huntress doubled its overall revenue to just over $40 million after acquiring cybersecurity training company Curricula.

"We're incredibly proud of our progress so far," said Tyler Stevens, CEO of Huntress. "Our partnership with Curricula has allowed us to provide our customers with easy-to-understand cybersecurity training while simultaneously growing our business."

In addition to supporting local entrepreneurs through its coworking space and accelerator program, Hutch continues to collaborate closely with other innovation hubs throughout Maryland – such as Towson University's StarTUp at The Armory. Already boasting several notable success stories within its first three years, StarTUp recently added a winter cohort aimed at fostering even more groundbreaking ventures in the region.

One such venture being developed by Johns Hopkins University researchers involves medical technology designed for spinal cord injury patients. They are working on an implantable device that would enable physicians to continuously monitor patient conditions following surgery or severe trauma – revolutionizing post-operative care for millions worldwide.

Maryland's thriving startup ecosystem showcases the incredible potential arising from collaborations between universities like Johns Hopkins or Towson University and local incubators like Hutch or StarTUp at The Armory. As these entities continue promoting entrepreneurship within the state, it becomes increasingly clear why they were awarded this high accolade.

"The Fire Award highlights not only our dedication but also underscores how vital collaboration can be when fostering a successful startup community," said Samantha Davis, co-founder of Hutch. "We are honored to be recognized as Blazer Winners and remain committed to supporting the next generation of Maryland entrepreneurs."
