UK criminologist Professor John Coxhead, a policing specialist at the University of East London, revealed that international criminal businesses operating in Britain are generating "eye-watering" sums of money by buying and selling drugs and firearms around the world. This comes in the wake of the conviction of Thomas Cashman, 34, for the fatal shooting of Olivia Pratt-Korbel, 9, in August 2022.
According to The Millennium Project, transnational organised crime generates more than "$4.7 trillion per year." However, due to its underground nature, this think tank estimates that the true figure could be closer to "$10 trillion." In comparison with legitimate global companies like McDonald's Corporation which has an annual revenue exceeding $20 billion as per Statista data from 2020 - these illegal activities surpass even some European country GDPs.
To prevent horrific violence similar to Olivia's tragic death from happening again and contain domestic gang crime issues on a larger scale; governments need to work together to "cut off the head of these chicken-like organized crime businesses," warned Professor Coxhead. He believes that active policing is not enough; instead it requires coordinated efforts between countries targeting top-level criminals who control these illicit networks.
Professor Coxhead also emphasized that without "cutting off their oxygen supply" at higher levels within illegal organizations—chiefly large-scale drug cartels or arms trafficking rings—the problem will not be contained nor resolved. As such crimes continue unchecked across borders worldwide despite national law enforcement measures taken against them locally where possible—it becomes increasingly clear just how critical international cooperation remains when combating ever-growing threats posed by global syndicates profiting immensely through nefarious means right under our noses here on British soil too!
