Long Island Rep. George Santos (R-NY) is set to announce his reelection campaign on Monday in Washington D.C., despite facing multiple calls for resignation from both parties following a series of lies about his personal and professional life. Despite these challenges, insiders still believe Santos can raise between $500,000 and $750,000 in the second quarter of 2023.
Santos currently faces a House ethics probe due to fabrications about his background and a federal investigation into his campaign's finances. Some of the most vocal critics come from within his district's own local Republican party.
Whispers circulate that Queens GOP City Councilwoman Vickie Paladino or Councilwoman Inna Vernikov may enter the race, as it seems all but certain that there will be a vigorous primary challenge against him. If he survives this primary challenge, he would face a well-financed Democrat during the general election campaign.
Other potential challengers include Republican State Sen. Jack Martins, Nassau County legislator Mazi Melesa Pilip, and former Republican State Senate hopeful Stefano Forte.
Democrats have seized upon the controversy surrounding Rep. Santos with billboard campaigns targeting lost Empire State congressional seats.
John Thompson, political analyst at New York University stated: "The upcoming announcement by Rep. Santos shows an unwavering determination amidst controversy; however, securing support within his own party may prove more challenging than ever before."
Rep. Mary Johnson (D-NY) commented on her opponent's situation: "It is crucial for our constituents to have trust in their elected officials - something that has been compromised by Rep. Santo's actions."
