Phoenix Business Journal has announced the winners of the 2023 Healthiest Employers Awards for various categories. The awards recognize businesses that demonstrate exceptional commitment to employee health and wellness.
Lauren's Institute for Children, a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing comprehensive services and support to children with special needs, clinched first place in the small business category. "We believe that healthy employees are essential to fulfilling our mission," said Jane Smithson, CEO of Lauren's Institute for Children. "Our team enjoys access to an on-site gym, regular workshops on stress management and mental well-being, as well as nutritious meals during work hours."
Shamrock Foods emerged victorious in the extra-large company category due to their holistic approach towards employee health. William Jennings, President at Shamrock Foods, shared some insights into their winning strategy: "We're committed not only to offering competitive benefits packages but also fostering a culture where physical activity is encouraged during breaks." In addition to these measures, Shamrock Foods provides its employees with free annual health screenings and flu shots.
Among other highlights from this year's awards was a panel discussion featuring representatives from each winning company sharing tips on how they have successfully implemented workplace wellness initiatives. Attendees were treated with valuable insights into what it takes to create a healthier working environment.
The City of Tucson earned third place in the large company category by investing heavily in employee wellness programs such as subsidized gym memberships and ergonomic assessments for office workers. Mayor Johnathan Harrison commented on this achievement by stating: "It’s important that we lead by example when it comes promoting public health; we want our city workforce fit both physically and mentally.”
Lastly, the micro category winner was Benefit Commerce Group, an employee benefits consulting firm. The company offers flexible work hours and remote working options to promote a healthier work-life balance for employees. Mary Thompson, HR Director at Benefit Commerce Group said, "Our focus is on helping our clients create healthy workplaces, so it's only natural that we hold ourselves to the same high standards."
