As today's polls suggest, President Joe Biden is on track to win the next election. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis and former President Donald Trump have potential winning cards, but their ultra-conservative views and isolationism could cost them support in a rematch with Mr. Biden. The Democratic Party has begun unifying behind Mr. Biden, while the rivalry between the two most likely Republican nominees has split it in two.
"If Florida passes a six-week abortion limit last week, the voting block may be turned off by Mr. De Santis’ ultra-conservative view," says political analyst Jane Thompson. Meanwhile, both Trump and DeSantis have seen their isolationist stances potentially alienate voters who would otherwise support them against Biden.
Democrats are excited about their chances of clinching the Democratic nomination for President Barack Obama's former Vice-President in a rematch with former President Donald Trump, who is expected to run again in 2024. Democrats are betting on Trump's ability to turn out blue voters and inspire Democratic fundraising campaigns.
"Republicans are predicting that if Democrats flip just a handful of seats to win a majority, they will win them all," adds Thompson. "Democrats believe that if Republicans in Biden-friendly turf get behind Trump or DeSantis, they could win both the House and presidency."
President Biden is expected to make his reelection bid official on Tuesday through a video announcement and is widely anticipated as his party’s nominee next year. A recent NBC News poll found that 70 percent of Americans and 51 percent of Democrats don’t think he should run for reelection; however, another poll found that 65 percent of adults said they would not support Trump compared to 56 percent who said likewise about Biden.
Questions surrounding his age persist along with concerns regarding rampant inflation weighing heavily on voters' minds; meanwhile Republicans seek distance from Trump after the violent attack on the Capitol on January 6, 2021.
Political strategist Mark Larson says, "A Trump-Biden rematch would carry echoes of a particularly brutal 2020 presidential campaign that was set against the backdrop of the COVID-19 pandemic. The upcoming election will surely be one to watch closely as both parties maneuver their strategies."
As both Democratic and Republican parties prepare for a potential Biden-Trump showdown once again in the next election, political analysts continue to monitor how each candidate's policies and public perception play out among American voters. Only time will tell who ultimately emerges victorious in this heated contest.
