South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol received a standing ovation at the White House state dinner on Wednesday for his rendition of Don McLean's classic song, “American Pie.” The recital left guests stunned and came at the encouragement of President Joe Biden, who told the 62-year-old South Korean leader that he knew "American Pie” was a favorite of his since 1971 and that attendees wanted to hear him sing it.
Yoon is currently on a six-day state visit to Washington to discuss various matters including North Korea's nuclear threats. The two leaders also affirmed their commitment towards ending any North Korean regime that uses nuclear weapons against their allies.
During the event, Biden presented Yoon with an acoustic guitar signed by McLean himself as a gesture from the artist who was unable to attend the state dinner. This marks the first state dinner honoring South Korea since December 2022 when Biden paid homage to France.
In response to Biden's request, Yoon belted out the first few lines of "American Pie" a cappella in English and in tune. His performance triggered rapturous applause from those present, delighting not only President Biden but also First Lady Jill Biden.
It is not Yoon’s first time singing in public; he recently appeared on famous South Korean TV show All the Butlers where he performed K-pop ballad “No One Else” by Lee Seung-chul.
The musical interlude during this important diplomatic event showcases both leaders' rapport while simultaneously highlighting some lighter aspects amidst serious discussions concerning international relations between their respective countries.
