Hundreds Gather in Portland to Protest Anti-LGBTQ+ Legislation with Drag Show

Hundreds of people gathered at the sunny Pioneer Courthouse Square in downtown Portland on Saturday for "Expressions: A Celebration of Drag and Transgender Rights." The free community drag show was held in response to anti-LGBTQ+ legislation across the United States, particularly focusing on a recent bill signed by Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee that blocked drag performances on public property and where minors could be present.

The event featured more than 15 performers and speakers, including renowned local artist Mx. Funds raised from the show will go towards OutMemphis, a Memphis-based nonprofit organization that supports LGBTQ+ individuals in that area. In March last year, a judge temporarily blocked the controversial law after it faced widespread criticism.

Organized by The Trans and Drag Freedom Initiative in partnership with Mx., attendees included notable figures such as Dahlia Belle from Portland Queer Caucus, representatives from Demand Drag, and Klip Klop Productions. Their presence at this gathering highlights an increasing unity among organizations fighting for transgender rights and against discriminatory laws.

Dahlia Belle spoke passionately about their support for events like Expressions: "It's crucial we stand up against these oppressive laws targeting our community," they said. "Events such as this one demonstrate our resilience, solidarity, and determination to fight discrimination."

One of the organizers from The Trans and Drag Freedom Initiative shared similar sentiments when asked about their motivation behind organizing Expressions: "We wanted to create a positive space where everyone can come together to celebrate love while raising awareness about harmful legislation being pushed around the country," they explained.

Attendees enjoyed vibrant performances throughout the day while also engaging with informative speeches addressing ongoing concerns related to LGBTQ+ rights across America. Many left feeling inspired by both performers' talent on stage as well as activists' dedication towards change offstage.

As more states continue passing laws restricting LGBTQ+ rights or imposing limitations on their communities, events like Expressions become even more vital in promoting awareness and fostering support. Through performances, speeches, and unity among various organizations working towards a common goal, the LGBTQ+ community proves time and again that they will not be silenced or deterred by discriminatory legislation.
