Elected Leaders Comment on Deadly Mass Shooting at Allen Outlet Mall

Elected leaders representing the city of Allen are commenting on the deadly mass shooting at the outlet mall there. State Rep. Jeff Leach, R-McKinney, and U.S. Rep. Keith Self have expressed their gratitude for the swift actions of first responders, while Sen. Ted Cruz and State Sen. Angela Paxton have also commented on the tragedy.

It is still early in the investigation and law enforcement officers haven't said what weapon the gunman used and what led to this shooting.

Gun legislation has been a topic of debate at the Texas Capitol during the regular legislative session, with none of the bills likely to be approved by Republican majorities in both chambers.

Texas Senator Roland Gutierrez criticized Texas Governor Greg Abbott and Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick for their lack of action in dealing with gun violence after a mass shooting occurred at an outlet mall on Saturday.

Abbott said he has been in contact with state and local leaders following the shooting to make sure all needed assistance and resources are "swiftly" deployed, while Patrick mourned the death of victims in a statement that read: "Please join Jan (my wife) and me in mourning those who fell victim to this unspeakable tragedy in Allen. We are thankful for their bravery."

Governor Abbott has also faced criticism for his decision to cut nearly $211 million from Health & Human Services Commission which oversees mental health programs among other services within Texas.

Gov. Greg Abbott rejected calls for gun control measures during an interview on Fox News Sunday but emphasized importance regarding mental health funding programs instead.

The tragic event took place at an Allen shopping mall resulting in eight fatalities along seven injured individuals last Saturday currently under investigation.

In response, Governor Abbott stated that lawmakers will look into penalizing people possessing guns illegally as well as investing more funds towards mental health initiatives throughout Texas.

Democrats argue lax gun laws in Texas contribute to such incidents, while Republicans have shown little interest in addressing this issue.

Gov. Abbott plans on providing hope and healing by visiting Allen Sunday in the aftermath of the mass shooting event.
