The Department of Buildings (DOB) is currently investigating a roof collapse along a stretch of businesses in Brooklyn that occurred on Sunday. Six businesses were impacted by the incident, but fortunately, no injuries were reported when a 75-foot-long stretch of bricks fell from the top of a one-story building located on Avenue T in Flatlands.
A witness who was waiting in line for ice cream described the scene as chaotic, with around ten people standing nearby when the collapse took place. "We were just chatting and enjoying our time when we heard this loud crash," said Marissa Stevens, an eyewitness at the scene. "I looked over and saw all these bricks falling down onto the sidewalk – it was absolutely terrifying."
According to DOB officials, inspectors are now examining what may have caused such an event to occur. In their preliminary investigation, they observed that sections of the building's parapet wall showed signs of deterioration prior to collapsing.
As part of their ongoing efforts to ensure public safety and maintain structural integrity throughout New York City buildings, DOB has issued multiple violations against property owners who fail to uphold required maintenance standards.
In this case specifically, authorities have given notice to Howard Greenberg - owner-occupant for failure to maintain his Avenue T property adequately. The violation issued could potentially result in fines if further actions aren't taken immediately.
DOB spokesperson Laura Feyer stated: "Safety is our top priority here at DOB; we will hold accountable those responsible for putting New Yorkers at risk by neglecting their properties." She also emphasized that it is crucial for property owners across NYC's five boroughs always take proactive steps towards maintaining safe conditions within structures under their responsibility.
While there has been no official word yet concerning potential repercussions or legal action resulting from this particular incident involving Mr.Greenberg’s property management practices - city officials remain committed towards ensuring every possible measure being put in place to prevent future occurrences of similar incidents.
