Florida Republican Reps. Matt Gaetz and Byron Donalds Defend Governor DeSantis Over Leaked 2018 Debate Prep Videos

Florida Republican Representatives Matt Gaetz and Byron Donalds have come to the defense of Governor Ron DeSantis after leaked videos from his 2018 debate preparation surfaced online. The two men argued that the video clips, which appeared to be an attempt at damaging DeSantis's reputation, actually portrayed him in a positive light as he discussed being cautious with his words so as not to alienate Trump supporters.

Many people online contend that the videos should not have been leaked and expressed disappointment over DeSantis not pushing back harder against false claims made by media outlets accusing him of making racist remarks towards Democratic opponent Andrew Gillum during their gubernatorial race.

In response to the leak, Representative Matt Gaetz took to Twitter saying, "I thought that De Santis was coming in 'too hot' on the issue." He further denounced those responsible for leaking the tapes, stating they should never have been released.

The leaked debate prep footage shows Governor Ron DeSantis addressing a controversy surrounding comments he made during his campaign trail in 2018 when he warned voters against "monkeying this up" by electing a Democrat with socialist ties. In these newly revealed recordings, DeSantis is heard voicing concerns about his comment potentially becoming "a mini version of Kavanaugh," referring to Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh's contentious confirmation hearings marked by allegations of sexual misconduct.

Additionally, in the same video clip, Governor DeSantis discusses conservative commentator David Horowitz's statements which also came under scrutiny during that time period.

Representative Byron Donalds likewise supported Gov. RonDe Santis amidst this controversy and criticized those behind releasing these confidential preparations: “It’s disappointing but unsurprising that someone would try to use old footage like this out of context for political gain.”

Both representatives argue that instead of harming Governor DeSantis's image, the leaked videos showcase his genuine intent to communicate thoughtfully and avoid alienating potential supporters. While some still criticize DeSantis for not fighting back more aggressively against false media claims in 2018, Gaetz and Donalds maintain that he should be commended for his measured approach during a heated political race.
