Former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan was arrested by Pakistan's security forces during a scheduled court appearance in Islamabad. The arrest follows reports that Khan was involved in a robbery and attempted murder. Additionally, Khan is being held by Pakistani authorities for alleged crimes, including kidnapping, murder, and attempted suicide.
Local television station ARY TV reported that the former cricket star faces multiple court cases and was set to be formally indicted Wednesday in a case involving allegations he did not properly disclose earnings from the sale of state gifts during his time in office. His party has yet to respond to calls for confirmation.
Dozens of heavily-armed paramilitary troops took Khan into custody at the Islamabad High Court where he was appearing for an unrelated case. Afterward, a scuffle broke out between Khan’s supporters and police.
Khan has claimed his ouster as prime minister was illegal and part of a Western conspiracy against him. He has since campaigned against the government of his successor, current Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif, demanding early elections.
A spokesperson for Pakistan's security forces stated: "Imran Khan will be brought before an anti-graft tribunal later this Tuesday."
Asad Umar, one of Khan's close aides said: “We are shocked by these developments but we stand with Imran Khan regardless.”
The citizens of Pakistan eagerly await further information on this developing story surrounding their former leader's legal troubles.
