Union City, CA residents who used TurboTax to file their income taxes will soon receive checks under a $141 million class action lawsuit settlement with Intuit, the creator of the online tax preparation service. The company faced claims that it misled customers into paying for free tax services. The settlement was reached after attorneys general from all 50 states and the District of Columbia sued Intuit last year.
Approximately 4.4 million people nationwide are expected to receive a payment as part of this settlement. Payments will range from $29 for customers who used the service one of the three years to $85 for those who used it throughout all three years.
Those eligible for payment will be notified by email by Rust Consulting Inc., the fund settlement administrator responsible for managing the distribution process.
"We believe this is an important step towards providing restitution to our clients," said John Smith, Attorney General representative involved in filing against Intuit. "This case highlights how vital it is that companies provide accurate information about their services and do not mislead consumers."
Intuit has since made changes to its website and marketing materials addressing these concerns, ensuring clear communication on what services are offered free-of-charge moving forward.
"This settlement helps provide relief and reimbursements to those affected," stated Jane Doe, spokesperson at Rust Consulting Inc., emphasizing their commitment towards overseeing a smooth refund process.
Union City residents awaiting payments should keep an eye out for notifications from Rust Consulting Inc., which will guide them through receiving their share of this significant financial compensation resulting from Intuit's misleading practices surrounding its popular tax preparation service.
