Google is set to unveil its foldable Pixel phone, the Pixel Fold, at its I/O developer conference on Wednesday. The tech giant will also introduce a tablet that doubles as a smart home display and the company's first attempt at a foldable smartphone. Although Google has not yet indicated when the Pixel Fold will go on sale or how much it will cost, industry observers predict that this product could push folding phones further into the mainstream.
"The introduction of Google's new foldable smartphone can be seen as an indicator of where this technology is heading," said tech analyst Susan Peterson. "Even if it doesn't break sales records, the Pixel Fold will undoubtedly raise awareness and demand for such devices."
In addition to playing up AI in its marketing strategy for the phone, Google released another teaser ahead of launch day highlighting features like device thinness and video watching capabilities. A previous promo showed sports stars and comedian Druski using the device in everyday life.
At today's event, Google revealed details about their $1,800 folding phone designed for easy one-handed use. With five cameras – including an 8.3-megapixel camera for selfies and three rear-facing cameras – users can expect high-quality photo potential from this innovative device built with Tensor 2 processor paired with 12GB RAM.
The thinner design sets it apart from competitors such as Samsung’s Z Fold series while maintaining impressive specs like an 11-inch LCD display with even bezels all around on its $500 slate-like tablet called "Pixel Tablet." This particular gadget targets those who enjoy streaming content or gaming within their homes by offering plenty of storage options (128 or 256 GB) alongside Android updates throughout the year.
According to James Thompson, Senior Product Manager at Google: "We are proud to bring our customers state-of-the-art technology through our latest flagship products. The Pixel Fold and the Pixel Tablet provide users with a seamless experience, whether they're on-the-go or enjoying entertainment at home."
The 7.6-inch flexible-display of the Pixel Fold resembles a regular phone from the outside but offers wider front display for comfortable typing. Google has optimized many Android apps, such as YouTube, Gmail, and Meet to work specifically on this device.
Set to hit stores in June, Google's latest innovation might become an essential addition to consumers' tech collection in no time.
