German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said on Sunday that the visit of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy to Berlin sent a "strong signal" that Germany would support Ukraine "as long as it is necessary". He added that Germany stood with its partners "for Russia to be held to account for its misdeeds".
Chancellor Olaf Scholz has made a personal pledge to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy that Germany will continue to support the government in Kyiv with military and other assistance for as long as needed. The visit was made for the first time since Russia's invasion and came a day after the German government announced its biggest package yet of materiel for Ukraine, worth nearly $3 billion.
Despite tight security in central Berlin, Zelenkiy thanked Scholz and the German people for their support and “for every Ukrainian life saved”. He joked that he would be working to make sure that Germany became his government’s biggest backer ahead of the US.
The two governments also agreed on a joint declaration in which Germany expressed strong support for Ukraine's efforts to meet the requirements to start formal talks on joining the European Union.
"We are grateful for this important step towards our integration into Europe," said President Zelenskiy. "Germany's unwavering commitment sends an essential message not only to our citizens but also across Europe."
Chancellor Scholz echoed this sentiment: "We believe in supporting democracies around us, especially those facing challenges like Ukraine. Our partnership demonstrates solidarity within Europe against any threat or aggression."
As part of their discussions, both leaders addressed concerns about Russian actions and emphasized their shared goal of holding Moscow accountable. They called upon other international actors such as NATO members and EU countries, stressing unity among Western nations against Russian aggression.
"Russia's actions cannot go unchallenged," said Chancellor Scholz. "It is our duty as a community of nations to ensure that the principles of international law are upheld and that those responsible for aggression face consequences."
In response, President Zelenskiy expressed gratitude for Germany's ongoing support in this difficult time: "With allies like Germany by our side, we will continue our fight not only for Ukraine but also for the shared values and principles that unite us all."
As their meeting concluded, both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to deepening cooperation between Ukraine and Germany. This historic visit marks an important milestone in relations between the two countries and sends a clear message to Russia about the strength of European unity.
