Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky held meetings in Rome ahead of his trip to Berlin on Sunday, building on the strong ties between Europe and his country. After visiting Germany, he will later travel to Aachen, in the country's west, where he is set to receive a prestigious award for his contribution to European unity.
Berlin has emerged as one of Ukraine's most significant allies within the European Union (EU), providing substantial financial and military support. The city ranks third overall after the United States and Britain in its backing for Kyiv, offering more than 14 billion euros through bilateral aid agreements and funding via multilateral organizations.
This assistance comes amid escalating tensions between Berlin and Kyiv. Recently unveiled plans include a massive 3-billion-dollar military aid package comprising tanks, artillery systems, aerial defense infrastructures—marking it as their largest joint effort yet.
The two countries have collaborated closely on weapon procurement initiatives throughout this period of uncertainty. To date, dozens of main battle tanks and infantry fighting vehicles have been supplied by Germany alongside state-of-the-art air defenses and heavy artillery equipment.
Both nations are also cooperating on establishing a tribunal that could potentially try Russian leaders such as President Vladimir Putin or Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov for war crimes committed during this ongoing crisis situation.
