Two staff members of Representative Gerry Connolly (D-Va.) were hospitalized on Monday after a person armed with a baseball bat entered the congressman’s district office in Fairfax, Virginia, and committed an act of violence. The assailant asked for Rep. Connolly before attacking the two staffers, who were taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
The suspect is currently in police custody. Rep. Connolly expressed his gratitude to the City of Fairfax Police Department and emergency medical professionals for their swift response to the situation.
In a statement, Connolly said that his primary concern is ensuring that his staff members receive proper care following this attack: "The thought that someone would take advantage of my staff’s accessibility to commit an act of violence is unconscionable and devastating."
